GIFFEST III by EYEYAH! looks at perfectionism through a multimedia showcase

Especially pertinent in modern times, what with a rising trend in notions of dissociation, EYEYAH! proudly presents GIFFEST III, whose theme this year revolves around the concept of “IMPERFECT”. Happening from now till Aug 26 at the National Design Centre, GIFFEST III highlights the beauty and value of imperfections, as well as an exploration of self-imposed ideas of perfectionism.

Particularly relevant to a generation navigating an increasingly digital landscape and AI-enabled world, the exhibition brings together more than 80 animated GIFs by widely acclaimed local and international creatives.

Exploring the theme from both perspectives of pure creative design and as a social issue, GIFFEST III invites visitors to consider imperfection as an essential part of human expression and creativity. The incredible digital artworks on display showcase the richness and diversity of GIFs as an artistic medium, engaging and drawing us in with interactive installations, immersive sectors, striking visuals, and poignant displays of vastly unusual images.

Marrying animation, graphic design, film, and photography through cutting-edge and experiential formats, look forward to highlights like a motion-activated installation that projects visitors as moving GIFs in real-time (but in a different form), a large-scale LED projection and screening nook, and even a truly retro portable DVD player that plays GIF clips – instantly taking us back in time – at this eye-opening exhibition.

Curated from an open call on Instagram, the festival’s exceptional collection of artworks and GIFs make their way to Singapore from a diverse web of acclaimed image makers and emerging artists spread across 30 countries.

Envisioned as a creative educational festival for all ages, GIFFEST III also showcases GIFs made by the students of Yumin Primary School, alongside interesting fringe programmes and activities such as a hands-on digital design workshop on Jun 24 for children aged 6 to 12, and a panel discussion on Jun 10, delving into the realm of AI-generated images, their influence on human values, and future notions of true perfection.
